With the new year, here is a reminder of everything you need to do when you move.

This paperwork is essential to avoid problems once you are living in your new home. Otherwise, you could miss important information such as official notices or fines, which can give you a nasty surprise.

To avoid this, we recommend the following:

  • Register at your new address with the local council (empadronamiento).
  • Go to an ID renewal office to update your address, so it appears on your national ID card from now on.
  • Apply for a new health card at your new health centre.
  • Notify the Spanish traffic authority (DGT) of your new address.
  • Tell the tax office (Hacienda) and your bank about your new address.
  • Give your new address to your employer.
  • Where applicable, cancel or update your current address with your utility providers: electricity, water, gas and so on.

Don’t worry: these are usually simple procedures that don’t take long. The sooner you get them done, the better!
